What makes VINsmart vehicle history reports different?

Besides providing NMVTIS specific data, VINsmart delivers J.D. Power & Blackbook vehicle valuations. Not only do VINsmart reports protect you from fraud but also provide assistance in the decision-making process of determining if this is the car for you and what is an acceptable purchase price. Similarly, the J.D. Power & Blackbook valuations included in each VINsmart report are beneficial to current owners interested in learning how much their vehicle is worth.

Why does my vehicle history report say "No NMVTIS record found"?

This message will appear for one of the following reasons:

  • An invalid VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) was entered.
Check the VIN and re-enter if necessary.
  • The VIN/vehicle is not in the NVMTIS database. This could occur if:
  • The title state is not currently providing data to NMVTIS,
  • The title state is updating NVMTIS in batch mode and the information has not made it to the database yet,
  • The VIN is legitimately not in any state's motor vehicle data. We strongly recommend that you contact the state directly for more information.
Why doesn’t my vehicle history report display owner or lienholder information?

Though personal identifying information is available on NMVTIS, federal statutes (Privacy and Protection Act) and some state statutes prohibit the display of that data to consumers. NMVTIS records provide:

  • Current and previous state of title data
  • Title issue date
  • Latest odometer data
  • Theft history data (if any)
  • Any brand assigned to a vehicle and date applied
  • Salvage history, including designations as a “total loss” (if any)

Read the NMVTIS Consumer Access Product Disclaimer, which describes what is and is not included in NMVTIS reports.

It is available to law enforcement, investigative and regulatory agencies. States may elect to share that information with you directly as they see fit.

I lost my report. Can I get another copy or do I have to generate a new report?

VINsmart Registered Consumers or Dealers can access their report history by selecting My Account and then History from the menu. The system will display a list of dates reports were generated and the number of reports requested. Click on the appropriate date and then the desired VIN to display your report. As vehicle history can change rapidly it is recommended to generate a new report if it has been 30 days after the last.Previously pulled reports are not stored for Unregistered Consumers and Dealers. You would need to request another report.

I did not receive my report. How can I get a copy?

Please contact VINsmart support at [email protected] Please have your VIN and email address on hand. Another report will be emailed to you at no charge.

What is an NMVTIS data provider?

The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) is an electronic system that provides consumers (individual or commercial) with valuable information about a vehicle’s condition and history. Prior to purchasing a used vehicle, consumers may access NMVTIS data through an Approved NMVTIS Data Provider. Approved data providers operate under contract with AAMVA, are authorized to sell NMVTIS Vehicle History Reports, and display the NMVTIS logo.

Do I have to register to get a vehicle history report?

No, you can simply enter your VIN and credit card information as you go. It is recommended that you register if more than one report is needed.

Does VINsmart save my credit card information on file?

No, the credit card information is not stored for consumers. We ask you to identify how many reports you would like to generate and charge you for those immediately. If additional reports are desired, and you don’t have available credit, you will be prompted to enter your credit card information again for the next charge. You can, however, purchase credits. This is helpful for volume buyers and users of our mobile app.

I am interested in checking more than one VIN. Do I need to enter all the VINs at one time or can I come back at a later date for another check?

You can generate the reports as needed. First, you must register with VINsmart. Upon registration, the system will prompt you for your credit card information and the number of reports you desire. The system will display the date you have become a member and the number of reports remaining. The number of reports remaining will decrease as VINs are checked.

What is CA AB1215 that I see referenced?

CA AB1215 is a new law affecting California Dealers as of July 1, 2012. This law requires all licensed car dealers in the state to obtain and disclose vehicle history reports from NMVTIS and requires them to place a “salvage” warning sticker on vehicles with a junk, salvage or title-brand.

Does VINsmart offer a mobile application?

Yes, mobile applications are available for the iPod and iPad. Just click below or go to the Apple Store and select VINsmart. You will be able to scan or talk the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) to save time.

How can I apply for a refund?

If for any reason, a report we deliver does not have information from the NMVTIS database, we will gladly issue a credit towards your next vehicle history report, or refund your money, no questions asked. PLEASE NOTE: Canadian VINs and chassis/incomplete vans or trucks will NOT be valued.
